The Interactive Faculty and Staff Directory is a Microsoft Power BI report that pulls data from Davidson's Banner ODS (operational data store) to provide users with a way to quickly browse and search for their colleagues across campus. Users are able to search by name, department, job title, and office location. This help desk article describes how to use the Interactive Faculty and Staff Directory.
The report is laid out into two sections. On the left is a narrow panel containing four search fields (in order from top to bottom: Search by Name, Search by Department, Search by Job Title, and Search by Office Location), and in the bottom-left corner is an interactive chart showing the count of employees by division. By default, all of the search fields are blank when the report loads.
On the right side of the report is the table that displays directory search results. By default, it shows all college faculty and staff until you begin searching and applying filters. Each record in the table should contain a picture, employee name (Last, First), job title, division and department, office location, campux mailbox, phone extension, and email address.
The four search fields allow you to quickly filter the directory.
To search using these fields, simply click into one of them and type the search string you want, then hit the "Enter" key or click the magnifying glass icon on the far-right side of the search field.
To erase your text and clear the filter from the directory, you can click the eraser icon on the outside of the search field.
These search fields are "wild card" searches, meaning they will return partial matches on any text that you type into them. If you enter "John" in the Name field, the directory will return all users whose first or last names contain that sequence of letters, like first name John and last names Johnson, Johnston, etc. If you enter "T&I" in the Department field, the directory will return all users in the T&I department regardless of what team they're on, like "T&I - User Success" and "T&I - Infrastructure."
You can also combine search fields to search across multiple criteria. For instance, if you want to find all Political Science employees with offices in the Preyer Building, you can enter "Political Science" in Department and "Preyer" in Office Location.
The chart in the bottom-left corner provides a list of all college divisions along with a count of the number of employees in each division. The list is sorted by count of employees in descending order.
This chart can also be used for quick filtering. To filter by division using this chart, just click on the red bar. To clear the filter, click anywhere else in the body of the chart.
You can also combine this chart's filters with the search fields above it. For example, to search for all College Relations employees with offices in Glasgow House, click the red bar for College Relations, then enter "Glasgow" into the Office search field.
