Install Microsoft Office 365 On Your Personally Owned Computer

Davidson College provides Microsoft 365 to all current students, faculty, and staff at no cost. Your Davidson license lets you install the full desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and the other Microsoft 365 apps on up to five personal devices (Windows or Mac).

Note: These instructions are for personal computers. Davidson-managed computers already have Microsoft 365 installed or available through your device's software portal. Your license remains active as long as you are a current student or employee of the College.

Before you install

  • Uninstall older versions of Office first. If your computer has an existing copy of Office (for example, Office 2019 or a trial version that came with the computer), remove it before installing Microsoft 365. Leftover installations are the most common cause of activation problems.
  • Stay connected to the internet for the duration of the download and installation.

Installation steps

  1. Go to https://portal.office.com/account and sign in with your Davidson account.
  2.  Select Install Office and allow the installer to download.
  3. Open and run the installer. If your computer asks whether to allow the app to make changes to your device, select Yes
  4. Wait for the installation to finish. This can take a while depending on your internet connection, so please be patient. You'll see a confirmation message when it's complete.

Activate your apps

  1. Open any Microsoft 365 app, such as Word or PowerPoint.
  2. When prompted to sign in, use your Davidson email address and password, and complete the Duo prompt.
  3. Once signed in, your license is active and all apps on that computer are ready to use.
