Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW)

The EDW is a centralized data warehouse where data assets across the college (Banner, Blackbaud, Slate, web apps, flat files, etc.) are joined together in one unified repository. Once the data is loaded into the EDW via a series of pipelines, it is restructured into different subject areas (admissions, budget reporting, course enrollments, etc.) and optimized for reporting and analytics. Users can then easily build reports in tools like Power BI and Excel.

Using the EDW for reporting carries numerous benefits, including faster performance, greater flexibility, better tracking of historical data changes, and the ability to query all in one place, regardless of which source system the data originated from. It increases data accessibility and transparency for the college, while also promoting modern best practices in data engineering and analytics.

Reporting Database (permission-based)

Data found in the Reporting Database (RPTDB) comes from Banner and is presented in different formats.  “DW” Data Warehouse tables were custom built to department requirements and are refreshed nightly. “DW” is in the process of being replaced with our Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW).  RPTDB also contains a Banner Operational Data Store (ODS) which contains "views" that are also refreshed nightly. RPTDB also contains some Banner tables which are "streamed" so that their data appears live.

With a manager's approval, staff needing to analyze and report on data in Banner, are granted roles that give permission to groups of tables.

Some Banner data falls under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). FERPA restricts access to and disclosure of information from students’ educational records without the written consent of the student.

Data can be accessed using different tools such as Microsoft Power BI, Microsoft Excel, and SQL Developer.
