Classroom Technology Guidelines

Use this guideline as a reference tool for Classroom Technology. It will go over some classroom specifications and hardware and a room by room breakdown.

Classroom Specifications

Davidson College has a couple of different classifications for classrooms that we use in T&I. This helps us breakdown not only what type of technology is in the room, but also the age of the system and how it operates. Here is a rundown of the types:

Legacy: an older system that is being phased out over time. These classrooms typically have an older bulb projector and dropdown screen, with an older model touch panel to control the system. Typically has a document camera, a cable for laptop connection, and may include a Bluray Player. Chambers has the most legacy rooms.
Standard: These rooms have a newer touch panel controller, and will likely have better overall technology. Same options as the legacy classrooms with a document camera, a cable for laptop connection, and a newer model Bluray Player. The Wall building is a good example of this type of classroom.
Simplified: These rooms have the newest technology. The touch panel system has been replaced with a simpler button control system, laser projector, state of the art document camera and Bluray Player, and other new features, like wireless laptop connection. The Watson Science Building is an example of this type of classroom.
Mobile Technology: These rooms are much like the Simplified classrooms with a major difference: the classroom does not have a dedicated computer (or document camera). These rooms are for users who like to use their laptop or mobile device, such as an iPad, to connect via an HDMI cable or wireless laptop connection. Chambers 2084 and 3084 are the only Mobile Technology classrooms to date. For more information on these types of rooms, click here.

Please note: Our classroom classifications are based on the technology in the room and do not change the room designation for the campus. Example: Chambers 3146 is a Teaching Lab classroom for the purposes of what it is used for on campus. Our classification as a "Legacy" classroom is just to classify the AV system and how it functions.

Hardware

As was previously mentioned, mostly all classrooms will have the following hardware:

A projector or display monitor that is for displaying content to the classroom
An additional monitor for the instructor to use
A classroom computer that allows users to choose Apple or PC operating systems
a connection cable or device for connecting a laptop or other mobile device
A document camera
a disc player - either a drive connected to the computer for playing CD/DVDs; a separate Bluray player; or both
A control panel that allows users to turn on/off the system and select inputs, control sound, and other functions. These are Touch or Button panel, depending on the age and design of the room.
