Edit Automatic YouTube Captions
Edit Automatic YouTube Captions
YouTube automatically captions all videos uploaded to its service, but those captions might be inaccurate representations. To edit captions in YouTube:
- Log in to YouTube Studio and click on the video you want to caption.
- In the menu to the left, select Subtitles.
- If the video is in a language other than English, select the correct language from the dropdown menu that appears or select “Add Language.”
- Under the rightmost “Subtitles” column, click on the three dots that appear when you move your mouse over the desired row and select “Edit on Classic Studio.”
- Click the “Edit” button over the video.
- Click on the text boxes to edit the subtitles. If you want to play the video from a certain point to determine what the subtitles should say, you can select the related text box or scroll through the video as you usually would and click the play button.
- When you’re done editing, save your changes. If editing YouTube’s default captions, the button will read “Publish Edits;” if you added another language, it will read “Save Changes.”
Uploading a Caption File
If you edited your captions using the Zoom Cloud feature or another tool, you can upload the file directly to your YouTube video rather than editing YouTube’s automatic captions.
- Open the “Actions” dropdown menu and select “Upload a File.”
- Use “Choose File” to find and upload the transcript of your video. Once you’ve selected the file, hit “Upload.”
