Google Drive Security Update: Updated Links for Older Files

Beginning Monday, September 13, 2021, Google will begin enforcing a security update that will affect older files that utilize shared links within Davidson’s Google Drive platform.

Which files will be affected?

Only files created outside of Google (e.g. Word, Excel, PDF, etc.) with internal or external links that were created before November 2017 will be affected by this update.

What does this mean for our users?

Users with affected files will begin receiving notification from Google on Monday, July 26, 2021.  This email will alert users of affected files.  Below is an example of the email users will receive.

How will this affect me as a file user?

File users that have not accessed these older files before the September 13, 2021 update will be required to request permission to access the file. Users that have been given direct access, including owners, will not be affected by the update.

How will this affect me as a file owner?

To avoid broken links, file owners that receive an email from Google should review affected files and update any published links before September 13, 2021.

Should a link not be updated, a new user attempting to access a link that was created before November 2017 will be required to request permissions to access the file. The owner of the file will receive an email from Google prompting you to share the file. This email will state the user is "requesting access via an old link".  An example of this email is below.
